[Business Insight@HKUST - Lunch Presentation Series] Online Versus Offline Commerce in Retailing and Banking

Consumers nowadays not only settle payment online, but also do their shopping via the Internet. Professor Theodore Clark and Professor Xiaojun Zhang of the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management have been studying the online technologies for e-commerce and e-payment services, and their implications on existing financial services firms and traditional retailers in future.

A New Market Equilibrium: The Role of Information Technologies in the Retail Industry
Although online retailing has grown substantially over the past decade, it still accounts for a small portion of total global retailing. To further penetrate into the markets dominated by brick and mortar stores, online retailers rely heavily on information technologies to expand their market share. Information technologies also play a critical role in affecting offline retailers’ sustainability and success. Professor Xiaojun Zhang will discuss the role of information technologies in affecting the new market equilibrium when offline retailers and online retailers compete in this new technology-enabled environment.

Evolution of Online Finance Markets: Evolution of Online Financial Services and Mobile Commerce in Banking and Commercial Payment Transactions
Information technology has clearly had a large impact on traditional banking services and transactions over the past 20 years. The challenges and changes are ongoing. Professor Theodore Clark will present his study on  how new technologies and firms challenge traditional assumptions about the services and businesses that will dominate in this new environment.  His study suggests financial services firms face serious challenges, but they also have strong advantages that can be leveraged in this emerging payment war.
